Katonah Yoga

Katonah Yoga has been developed by Nevine Michaan and her teachers over the last thirty years. It is both spiritually refined and eminently practical. As an egalitarian yoga, it works for novices as well as advanced body workers. One needn't have a mystical or"Eastern" orientation to benefit. By synthesizing traditional Hatha yoga postures and meditation with classical Taoist Chinese theory, it provides a clear yet powerful understanding of the mechanics of the body while encouraging increased awareness of the self. The essence of all Hatha Yoga practice is the postures (asanas).

Pranayama

prana as space dust- the ions, ores and minerals in the universe. Pranayama is a technique used to consciously extract these minerals from the atmosphere and to transmute this universal energy into food for the body and mind. Using the breath as the focus of the meditative experience, different breathing techniques are engaged with the goal of increasing elasticity of the lungs, breath capacity, awareness and efficiency. Pranayama is the heart of the hatha practice. The refinement of breathing ultimately informs and transforms the mind and body.

Insight Meditation

Insight Meditation(known as Vipassana in the Buddhist tradition) is a simple technique that has been practiced in Asia for over 2,500 years. Beginning with the focusing of attention on the breath and developing awareness of all phenomena, the practice concentrates and calms the mind. It allows one to see through the mind’s conditioning and thereby to live more fully present in the moment. Gina’s teaching is non-sectarian, although the ethics and traditions of Buddhist psychology are included for guidance. There is no requirement that any beliefs or rituals be adopted, although an open mind is requested. The practice develops clarity of seeing which allows grasping, judgment and fear to fall away. One discovers and cultivates qualities such as peace, vitality, compassion, equanimity, wisdom, joy and moral integrity. The ultimate aim of the practice is the ending of suffering in the discovery of an unconditioned and complete freedom. Each session includes 45 minutes of sitting meditation (detailed instructions are given), 15 minutes of walking meditation, a talk and discussion. It is suitable for beginners and experienced meditators and everyone is welcome.

Katonah Inspired Yoga with Osi

Osi has been a student of Katonah Yoga studying under Nevine for over 20 years. Her teachings draw deeply from the traditions of Kabbala, Kundalini, Shambala, and Ayurveda. Her philosophy stresses the importance of living a life of purpose and intention while keeping the creative spark lit and being open to self-reinvention. The dialogue between the intimate sphere and larger world is fundamental to Osi's work helping individuals find balance and vitality. Even as Osi stresses the importance of a simplified life, she lives by the principle of commitment, something she learned by studying yoga and serving as a yoga instructor for more than 13 years. Training students to cultivate their inner beauty and strength is her passion. Osi attracts students of all ages and ability. Her strength is to bring each student to the edge of their practice.

Katonah Inspired Yin Yang & Restorative Yoga

Yin yoga targets the deep connective tissues and the fascia that covers the body while helping to regulate the flow of energy. Yang yoga is the more traditional hatha based asana practice that develops muscular strength, stamina, and flexibility.  This class will be taught as a seasonal practice and unique blend of poses that link breath to movement combined with longer holds in a classic Katonah style measurement.  With a focus on gentle flow and restorative sequencing this class is designed to help the student find space, relax deeply and get ready for his/her week ahead.

Radiant Body Katonah Yoga

Because our bodies are designed to fit together and our breath and yoga postures influence our psychology, we influence how we feel by altering how we move and how we breathe.  Practicing Radiant Body Katonah Yoga gives us insights to self adjust as we learn to let go, drop attachments to particular outcomes, find our own rhythm and vibrate the universe with buoyancy and radiance.  Using the Katonah Magic Square as a map, we set up conditions to receive the blessing of the Asanas, Kriyas, Pranayama, Chanting and Mantras, often with healing effects, as we weave our personal narrative threads, making our practice joyful, easeful and graceful.  Applying Taoist principles to open the spaces for our organs, Tai Ji movements to make us buoyant, and Kundalini teachings which can deepen our relaxation into the postures and increase awareness.  In the process, we awaken to our higher bliss nature and live a life of deep presence.
